Chip tuning or remapping your Rover will give your an improved driving experience because the process will make appropriate adjustments to ignition timing, fueling, and other factors that can that will apply to your specific driving style.

Chip tuning and remapping are essentially the same procedure, differing only in how the EPROM chip, which stores performance values, is accessed. This chip is an "erasable programmable read-only memory" chip, which features the type of memory that retains information even when its power supply is turned off.

For pre-2000 car models, chip tuning is used. For later models, remapping is the appropriate method. For pre-2000-model Rovers, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is removed to gain access to the chip. Upon removing the chip, the generic data stored there by the manufacturer is "read" to determine what changes should be made to improve your Rover's performance. Once these changes are selected, the chip is reprogrammed with new values, inserted back into the ECU, and the ECU is reinstalled in your engine. For newer Rovers, the data on the chip can be accessed via an OBD/OBDII port and connected to electronic diagnostics in the vehicle. The data can also be altered through this port, eliminating the need to remove the ECU.

Performance is improved because generic information supplied by the manufacturer takes no notice of your particular driving style or the conditions in which your vehicle operates. You can gain significant improvements in power and fuel economy by having your vehicle remapped or chip-tuned. There will also be getter responsiveness in the throttle after these procedures.
